Getting your hands dirty, making art from mud and plants, and discovering that the earth has been teaching you all along.

Something changes when you get your hands in actual soil. Not craft clay, not decorative sand — real earth. The kind with things living in it, the kind that smells of rain and roots and deep, patient time. This month, we’re going there together. After March’s gentle botanical introduction — the pressed flowers, the flower inks, the seeds set carefully in pots on windowsills — April asks us to go deeper. Past the pretty and into the mud itself. Earth pigments — ochre, umber, sienna, the colours of canyon walls and riverbanks — are some of the oldest art materials humans have ever used. When you paint with them, you’re joining a conversation that has been going on for 40,000 years. And those seeds you planted last month? It’s time. Time to carry them outside, to introduce them properly to the ground they’ll live in, to trust the earth with what has been quietly sprouting in the shelter of your home. There is a whole ritual in that act alone, as you’ll find later in these pages.
