June is the month the sun refuses to go to bed. The longest day arrives and the light just keeps coming — golden at nine in the evening, still faintly there at ten. There’s something almost overwhelming about it, this abundance of light after months of reaching toward it. Litha asks us to stand in it fully. Not to squint and turn away, but to turn our faces up and let it land. This month we’re working with the sun as a creative collaborator. Not painting pictures of the sun — actually using its light as our art-making tool. Sun printing with leaves and flowers. Solar dyeing with jars left in full sun. Sun catchers made from tissue and laminate that catch the light and throw colour across your walls. The sun does the work. We just set up the conditions and get out of the way. I’ve been making paper sun catchers in my grimoire for years — it’s one of those simple techniques that never gets old because the results are always different, always beautiful, always surprising. This month I’m sharing that with you, plus a larger version you can make into a mobile using twigs from your garden. Practical magic at its most joyful. “The sun has been making art since the beginning of time. This month we ask it to make art with us.” Litha is a time of fullness. Of standing at the peak before the slow turn back toward darkness begins. It’s a moment worth marking, worth celebrating, worth making something beautiful for. Let’s do exactly that. Welcome to Issue 9. Find your sunniest window. We’re making magic with light.
